My work is guided by a fascination with transformation—of simple materials into soulful forms, and of stories into tangible objects. I sculpt primarily in paper mache, drawn to its versatility, sustainability, and quiet strength. Each piece is built slowly by hand, layer upon layer, until a presence begins to emerge. Though my process is entirely intuitive, it is grounded in a deep respect for the craft tradition and the enduring beauty of handmade objects. As a self-taught artist, I follow my curiosity and hands-on experimentation, trusting the material to guide me. My goal is to create pieces that evoke wonder, stillness, a sense of reverence or just whimsy—small totems of the sacred and strange.

Rachael DiRenna is a self-taught sculptor based in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Working primarily with paper mache, she creates expressive, myth-inspired forms that explore the intersection of nature, folklore, and timeless craft. Her work is deeply rooted in the transformative potential of humble materials, turning recycled paper into hauntingly beautiful figures full of character and depth.
