Melissa Sullivan

Specialty:
I am energetic, curious and eager to learn all I can about this medium as the potential for artistic expression through the medium of clay is limitless. Although I have been making art for a very long time, it still seems that I never lack for new ideas, have had a creative “block” or experienced boredom. I suppose I still have a lot to say! I currently produce both functional and non- functional sculpture and decorative pieces. Much of my work is whimsical and nature- inspired. However, it is also important for me, as an artist, to respond to the current political milieu by making art that addresses topics such as Social Justice and Climate Change. In so doing I seek to encourage both insight and civil discussion.

Melissa’s Biography

Melissa was born and raised on Long Island NY. She received a BFA from the University of Wisconsin, with a concentration in Ceramics. She went on to the University of Iowa where she began graduate studies in Ceramics but, disenchanted with the strong focus of the program to create utilitarian vessels, she instead decided to pursue a Master’s Degree in Art Therapy. Ms. Sullivan had worked in the fields of both Art and Recreation Therapy for several years when she moved to Pittsburgh. After working primarily in the field of mental health, Melissa decided to obtain a Master’s Degree in Counseling. She attended Duquesne University and subsequently began a long and fruitful career as an elementary school counselor. Despite her career path, Melissa continued to make and show her art. Now a full-time artist, Melissa’s work has been exhibited in numerous juried shows throughout the region and in many private collections, as well as in several galleries locally and on Long Island, NY.
