I began designing, creating, and working with wood in 2006 mainly as a way to decompress from the stress of the corporate business world. I have a BFA in Communications-Graphics from Edinboro University and my initial concentration was on 2D graphics, design, drawing, and painting.
My art is an exploration in wood where I utilize various domestic and exotic hardwoods to serve as my canvas. I’ll often harvest or hand-select specific species of wood for a project. I find wood that is highly figured or has an interesting grain pattern the most fascinating. To obtain a striking visual effect, I will incorporate one or more secondary wood species or introduce a stone, metal, glass, or some other component for a contrasting yet complimentary union of materials. Almost as important as the selection of wood species and design is the finishing process which I pay very special attention to. Each work will have multiple coats of an oil-varnish blend to accentuate the naturally occurring pattern within the wood. The end result is a functional piece of art that can be used for placement, containment, or concealment.
I am represented by several local art galleries and I have exhibited in numerous festivals and art exhibitions. I am a member of the Associated Artists of Pittsburgh, the Craftsmen’s Guild of Pittsburgh, and the Western Pennsylvania Woodworker’s Association.
