Luna Jaze is a small company that makes exclusive, handmade, leather bags and wallets, designed and made by myself, Jamie Murphy. I am Pittsburgh Artist and have a background in fine arts. I received a BA in Fine Arts at the University of Pittsburgh, and have been painting and exhibiting for many years. Beginning in Oils and progressing to Watercolors with Mixed Media, I thought I had found my niche, until I worked in leather. Art isn’t a choice, it’s a gift.
I fell into making bags quite by chance. I had an old hobo bag that I adored and in such ill condition, that it was unable to be repaired. Since I was able to sew, I thought I might try my hand with leather and duplicate my bag. I did, it looked great, and a man bought my bag off of my arm in Office Depot. My daughters wanted bags, my friends wanted bags, and before I knew it, I had a small business.
Working in leather allows me to translate my training in two-dimensional art into three-dimensional leather art in the form of my bags. Fabric art incorporates different limitations than painting, but I find it to be an addictive process. Using premium full grain leathers inspires my creativity; I see designs in my leather as I would conceive paintings on my canvas.
Legacy bags are fully lined and adorned with antique buttons and with pockets for any type of organization. Peace bags are uniquely shaped, one of a kind bags and clutches. Three percent of retail sales from the Peace Bags are donated to a charitable organization. Current donations are going to the Braddock Library in Braddock, PA. as part of Go Forth Braddock: a project that supports the gentrification of a decaying neighborhood.
I have always been fascinated by spirals in nature. As an artist I was introduced to Fibonacci’s number, and the golden ratio in paintings and their relationships to the spiral. All Luna bags are lined with a spiral-design fabric and the outside is embossed with my signature-spiral. Wear your Art!
